Waiting….

Friday: I was ready to place my order! All ready to get going on the fabric designs I’d started. I was filling my cart up with all the proofs, fabric samples and color maps I could find. But then I stopped for just a minute. There were some nagging questions my brain had been asking that my shopping self had been ignoring. A few important “what ifs…” “whys..” and “how in the hells…” So for a minute I allowed those questions to surface.

“What if I’ve really chosen the wrong colors?” (ok, proof the colors in Photoshop! Ooooo…not good. I know I need to calibrate my screen, but, ugh!)

“Why is anyone going to buy my fabrics?” (Um. Ah. Ok, they’re not. Shoot.)

“How in the hell am I going to proceed?” ((have a glass of wine.) Gulp.)

Now there were two ways to proceed, as I saw it.

1. Tell brainy me to “Shut Up! You worry too much!” and proceed with my purchase (knowing full well I had no defensible explanation to give my husband).

2. Let shopping me look around for used books instead, while brainy me takes a few steps back to contemplate the following….

First: What am I doing again? As I peruse Spoonflower, the online fabric design shop I love, love, love, I have to admit that my designs, so far, aren’t quite fabulous enough. I know they will be eventually, but right now, not.  So that angle needs more time.

Follow Me on Pinterest if you want to see some of the fabulousness that abounds on Spoonflower. Also, click the “Like” button over there on the left to follow me on FB. Eventually I’ll post updates there instead of on my personal FB page.

Second: And then what? You can buy yards and yards and yards of fabric just to admire it. Yes you can. However, most people expect to use the fabric in some capacity and it’s my job to get some ideas out there so people know what the possibilities are.  “Stripes!” I yelled. On the inside. Birds and Stripes.  Do you know how cool stripes are?! Check out Malka Dubrawsky and Kaffe Fassett for only the littlest taste. Stripes are amazing. Do you need my stripes? I dunno? Do I need them? Maybe?

So not only am I suffering from some deep confusion and only a little self-doubt I’m also easily distracted (had forgotten about Flickr until just now while I was looking for those links up there, and btw, everything Malka does is off-the-map awesome).

“Stripes!”

Yes, I did manage to gather some really neat ideas to showcase the fabric ideas swirling around me! But, time, time, time. I’ve planned a little too aggressively here.  I expect something will be in my Etsy shop by Friday, but I still don’t know what.

What about the Birdie cards? I’m working on getting just the right combination of paper and ink/paint. Right now I’m using Arches cover stock which is not designed for what I’m doing. It is for letterpress (should I learn that too? Where can I find a press? Of course I spent time trying to answer these questions). But it is totally awesome. I just need to find something magical to go with it…..Or I will ditch it for another paper. Or I will keep it all and explain that this is art. No, wait, it’s Art. I have a few more days to decide how I feel about it. I am hooked on the block printing though.  While I love how much computer-y stuff I’ve learned so far, creating something with my hands is much more fun/rewarding/spiritually uplifting.

Oh, and the tooth fairy purse for Ellen, I have a design in my head now, thanks to some helpful suggestions from FB friends. It looks like this:Basic RGB

And another bird idea, embroidered on felt. I’m glad I’m typing this all down here. Maybe I should make myself a list….

So I’ll be here all week wringing my hands trying to decide just where to start. I will continue posting photos without much explanation during the week and try to sum up at the weekend!

I have some explaining to do…

There are a few different things going on here. First, both of my children are in school now. For the first time in more than 5 years I have a stretch of time all to myself that is longer than 12 minutes and during daylight hours.  I’ve been saving up for this moment.  Here are some of the possibilities that ran through my head as I contemplated what to do with all that time:

Clean the house.

Get a job.

Bake every recipe from Dorie Greenspan’s book “Baking: From My Home to Yours”

Go back to school.

Nap with the cats.

Exercise.

Meditate.

Play my fiddle.

Sew.

Learn how to knit.

Start my own business.

I’ve decided to do all of these. Except the first two, cleaning and getting a job. Also, napping with the cats, though enticing, will have to wait until I’m a little older.  No naps.    And maybe not all of Dorie’s recipes. And by “going back to school” I mean taking online courses through Coursera and learning things the old-fashioned way.

Some of you may remember way back in 2008 when I was selling bags on Etsy. I loved that. I wasn’t trying to make a business out of it though and when I ran out of fabric I closed up shop, happy with what I’d been able to accomplish ($600 in donations to help fight hunger). It always seemed to me that if I wanted to run that as a business I was going to need to put in more time. So I waited. Not always so patiently.

So today, I’m here putting together what I hope will be a long-term endeavor to create, make, share, help and journey through art, craft, music, passion and love.

Now, I could have kept this all to myself. I could have sweated and slaved in the privacy of my own home, keeping secret my ideas (good and bad), hiding my struggles (good and bad) and waited to share all this with you until it was “perfect.”  Until everything matched, all the buttons worked and the floor had been swept clean.  But that seemed somewhat dishonest and since nothing I ever do is “perfect” I wouldn’t have ever shared. That’s no fun.

What you’ll see here is me learning. Right now I’m learning how to use Adobe Illustrator.  And I’m learning it primarily through trial and error.  The designs I’ve made so far are the results of those lessons.  The one I posted last night was an absolute miracle! But I haven’t seen them in fabric yet and though I know the colors on my screen (probably yours too) do not reflect what they will look like once printed, I’m still not entirely sure what I’ll do once I have them (in couple of weeks I hope).  I have one more fabric idea in mind and then I will let those sit and sprout for a while as I work on other things.

I do know that Ellen needs a tooth fairy pouch.  Any day now her teeth will start falling out and I want to be ready.  I’m also going to turn my little bird into a stamp, or two. I love making my own notecards. Maybe someone else would like to buy these things from my shop? I don’t know, but I’m going to find out.  I also want reuseable fabric produce bags and will start experimenting with those soon too.

In the “less than well-formed ideas” arena are embroidery, mixed media art, photography, crochet, and bags.  I have also discovered watercolor pencils.

Now what sort of questions do you have?

Sharon, are you prepared to pay taxes?

Sharon, have you thought about how you will ship things?

Sharon, what level of inventory will you keep?

Sharon, what exactly will you be posting on Facebook?

Sharon, how much do you plan on investing in all this?

It’s all fair game, ask away!

What’s Next?

Everything! The kids are both in school now! I have nearly 4 hours each day to “work,” so I’m going to start my own business! I’m going to design fabric, make hand cream and lip balm! I’m going to sew art and practical things, design patterns and write recipes, and who knows what else! I am entirely unprepared for this and I’m biting off way more than I can chew! I am absolutely bursting with ideas and energy! This is going to be one wild ride!

I usually puke on those rides.

Nevermind! As it all starts to come together in the next couple of weeks I’ll be offering sneak peaks here! Something will happen February 1st! No, I don’t know what it is yet!

Look Mom and Dad! I ate all of my Brussels sprouts!

Um. Shouldn’t I be sewing? Yes! But I do other things too. I want to share them with you. I might have to change the title of the blog but for now we’re going to stick with Sewshaz sews and other stuff.  Hang in there, I promise it’s worth it.

I did learn recently how to make proper Brussels sprouts. Whilst visiting friends in Iowa, whose prowess in the kitchen is unmatched, I was schooled in the preparation of these perennially detested little cabbage heads  sweet and tender morsels. The  secret? Bacon fat. Some garlic. And they should be browned until quite dark. Burned really.  Please try it.

I would also like to note that I shot that photo at 1/13th of a second, f1.8, no flash, handheld. So to the photog prof who said I could not do it at less than 1/50th, poo on you. 🙂
